Since we announced in April 2012 our intention to expand the Trans Mountain Pipeline, we have been working toward the day that we present our $5.4 billion project proposal to the National Energy Board. That day has arrived.
The Facilities Application for the Trans Mountain Expansion Project represents thousands of hours of diligent and thoughtful work. We planned for a pipeline route. We conducted environmental and socio-economic assessments, engineering studies and field studies. We listened to diverse groups and incorporated their feedback.
The Application is set out in a series of documents presenting a transparent and detailed description of the project. In addition, it respectfully presents the ideas, observations and concerns of First Nations, citizens, stakeholders, and government representatives who engaged with Trans Mountain.
The Application also addresses provincial interests and concerns, including the five requirements set out by the BC Government for the province to support construction of new heavy oil pipelines within its borders. We are confident that the Application demonstrates that we can fully address and satisfy these interests.
Trans Mountain’s work will continue, as will the opportunities for continued dialogue, as the project moves toward a public hearing in the months ahead.
Most recently, I have been touring communities along the pipeline route, discussing the broad economic benefits that the Trans Mountain Expansion Project will generate through employment opportunities, local spending, taxes and other benefits.
Topics such as economic benefits, pipeline routing and environmental protection, will soon be reviewed by the NEB. As well, we will continue to discuss them with First Nations, communities, landowners and other interested groups.
Please join us in this process. We invite you to learn more about the expansion project, and about the opportunities to engage with us as we move ahead.
